Keyara's Story
The past 5 years I have been apart of the National Women’s Rugby 7’s program. I have competed at the World Series level for 2 years and now I am currently training for the upcoming Olympics!
I grew up in the small town of Vulcan, Alberta, the nearest city was just over an hour away. I’ve had the dream of going to the Olympics once I was a little girl, however always having to travel, the thought of being noticed or given the opportunity to play at a higher level was very slim. I started dancing as soon as I could walk, and pursued it for around 12 years and absolutely loved it. When junior high came around I started to engage in other sports; soccer, volleyball, track, basketball and rugby. I was a very competitive athlete and always wanted to better myself, which meant driving an hour into the city and back 4-5 times a week, to compete at the club level.
When grade 11 rolled around, I was introduced to rugby 7’s and instantly fell in love, the speed and accuracy of the game had a huge impact on me and my Olympic vision. I was lucky enough to have been scouted by the National Team after a home tournament, shortly after I was contacted by head coach of the program and was invited out to Victoria, BC for a trial! I was able to be named for a few Maple Leaf & U18 Canada tours after the trail. When I graduated in 2017, I was offered a spot for the upcoming season! At 17 years old, I moved to Victoria away from friends and family to pursue my Olympic dream!
